Best Beaches
Kealakekua

Kealakekua is one of The Big Islands best beaches... This beautiful lava beach is in the town called Captain Cook, next to the Place of Refuge, on the west side of the Island.

There is a boat ramp which protects part of the beach making a great, safe place for beginner snorkelers, and for kids to swim.

But, on other parts of this beach, you can go right off the lava into the water. Those are better places for experienced swimmers. There you are in open ocean, but it is protected to some degree, because of the reef.

This is such a great place to snorkel!

It's actually the best place to snorkel on the Big Island. There are so many brightly colored fish, of all shapes and sizes. And the multi colored reef is gorgeous, with red, pink, yellow, blue, green, gold, and purple coral.

There are also tons of turtles here....and some of them are huge!

If you take a kayak out a little further, into another protected cove, you will find that the snorkeling is even better.

Certain times of year dolphins come and have their babies, so you will see them if you’re lucky.
