Bird of Paradise
Plant Care

So, what do you need to know about Bird of Paradise plant care?

Bird of Paradise Plant

This beautiful exotic plant can be found growing almost anywhere in hawaii... in peoples yards, by the beach, even along the road.

But if you live elsewhere, it may take a little more work to be able enjoy this tropical plant.

But don’t worry! … It’s not hard.

The ideal place for these plants is in a warm, humid climate, and it is native to Africa and South America. Is it possible to have this plant in colder climates? With the proper care, yes.

Make sure your plant gets lots of sun, and is in temperatures of 50 degrees or above. In warmer climates, with temperatures of 65-70 degrees, (where there is no chance of snow or frost) they can be planted outside.

Careful watering is important. Make sure to keep the soil around Birds of Paradise plant moist during the spring and summer, (during the growing season.) In the fall and winter, you can allow the soil to dry a bit between watering. Good drainage is also very important.

Bird of Paradise Plant It is a good idea to re-pot your young Birds of Paradise, each spring so that they will have more room to grow.

And remember for potted plants.. use a peat-based potting soil, and give them fertilizer every three months during the growing season. They don't need to be fed very often in the fall and winter.

More things to remember when caring for your Bird of Paradise:
  • Sometimes it can take up to five years for your plant to mature and bloom… be patient!

  • You can encourage blooming by keeping the soil moist and misting the leaves during the growing season, and feeding the plant at the beginning of the spring (the growing season) with a general fertiliser.

  • Bird of Paradise plants will not grow from stalk cuttings, as they grow from underground rhizomes.
