Hawaii Tide Pools

Hawaii tide pools are found mostly on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Many people think of tide pools as little puddles that trap tiny critters at low tide. But Hawaii has giant tide pools, which offer a whole new experience. They are big enough that you can get in and swim or snorkel alongside the not-so-tiny critters. And, because they are completely cut off from the ocean, even the inexperienced snorkler can have a good time.

Tide pools on the Big Island can be 50-100 feet long and up to 15 feet deep. These tide pools are ponds of sea water that were formed by the uneven flow of lava into the ocean. At high tide, the ocean fills up the low spots, creating a pool that is closed off to the rest of the ocean. Fish and other sea creatures get stuck in the pools when the tide goes out. You can find sea anemones, sea slugs, big tropical fish and coral in a rainbow of colors.

Some tide pools are heated by volcanic freshwater springs creating warm brackish water. So they are nice and cozy. Usually there are underwater caves where the really big fish live and come out at night, but sometimes you can catch a glimpse of them in the daytime.

One of the most beautiful things about tide pools is the way the light filters through the water onto the rocks...it creates a neon shimmering effect that is mesmerizing. Snorkeling in these tide pools is like being in a giant fish bowl, and you are the biggest fish. It’s an experience you won't forget.
