Understanding Hawaiian Menus
Hawaiian menus can be full of unfamiliar words. Afraid you are going to order raw fish accidentally? Or a main course of poi?
Here is a guide to words you will see on Hawaiian Menus.
Huli huli ~Huli means "to turn". Food cooked huli huli is turned on a spit over coals. To be authentic, the coals must be keawe wood.
Ka lua
~Ka lua means the food has been cooked in a Imu, an underground oven.
Lomi lomi
~Lomi means to rub. Lomi lomi salmon is salmon thats been rubbed with salt, and marinated with onion and tomato.
Poke
~Poke means to slice or cut. Poke fish is cubed raw fish marinated in spices.
Limu
~Limu is red seaweed that is often used in Hawaiian cooking.
Lau Lau
~Ka lua pork, chicken or fish wrapped in taro leaves and baked in an Imu.
Poi
~Poi is a traditional Hawaiian condiment. It is taro root that has been cooked and pounded into a paste. Poi is one of the most nutritious foods you can eat.
Taro
~Taro, also called kalo, is a root grown in Hawaii. One of the foods the original Hawaiians brought to the Islands is taro.
Haupia
~Haupia is a coconut cream pudding.
Musubi
~A musubi is a traditional Japanese food made of rice, with spam, eggs, and/or chicken, wrapped in a nori sheet. It is very delicious and can be found at most 7/11's in Hawaii.
Loco Moco
~A Loco Moco is a local favorite. It is two scoops of rice, two fried eggs, a serving of meat, fish, or chicken, covered with gravy. Some people like it with furikake.
Furikake
~Furikake is a traditional Japanese condiment. It is a combination of dried nori (seaweed) and other ingredients such as sesame seeds, salt, bits of egg or fish, and sometimes sugar. It is generally used as a rice seasoning.
Plate Lunch
~A Plate Lunch consists of two scoops of rice, a macaroni or potato salad with a main course of meat, chicken, or fish, such as teriyaki, Korean beef, barbecue pork, Korean chicken, Katsu chicken, fried chicken. Or the main course could be a local fish such as akuli, mahi mahi, or ahi. The potato salad is often made with purple sweet potatoes.
Bento
~A Bento is a traditional Japanese box lunch. It consists of rice, eggs, sushi and meat, with pickled ginger, and soy sauce on the side.
