Hawaiian Plumeria

Hawaiian Plumeria

The Hawaiian plumeria, is a very popular flower in the Islands. They are simple, yet beautiful flowers that grow on small trees and have a very alluring fragrance. Usually they are white and yellow, but sometimes they are pink, or mixed yellow/pink/orange.

These flowering trees were introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in the 19th century. But, they use to only be used in cemeteries. Their original name, actually means, “graveyard tree”. So for a while most people didn’t want to wear them, because they saw these flowers as a symbol of death.

But today, the plumeria is used for all kinds of things.

They are commonly used to make leis (a necklace of flowers). People often give leis as a sign of welcome, or sometimes congratulations. Some people make flower arrangements using plumerias, or simply put a single flower behind their ear.

Other people put them around the house, because of the sweet aroma. There are also many plumeria flavored perfumes and essential oils.

The plumeria in Hawaii blooms around April, and looses its leaves in the cooler months. Except for the Singapore variety, which blooms year-round.

family: apocynaceae
relatives: periwinkle, be-still tree
Other names: frangipani (British), Melia (Hawaiian)
Origin: Tropical America
