Hilo Hawaii beaches.........
Coconut Island

Another one of the great Hilo Hawaii beaches, is Coconut island. But this wasn't always a place to go swimming and spend the afternoon in the sun. There use to be a hospital on this tiny island, but it - along with most of down town,- was destroyed by a tsunami. There is a palm tree on the island that has survived through three tsunamis, and there are marks on the tree showing how high the water covered the island during each one.

Coconut Island is a small island, about 40 or 50 ft from shore, and there is a walking bridge to get to it. It’s mostly a big grassy field, but there are palm trees lining the shore, and a small area where there are some trees for shade. There are also picnic tables.

There are still remnants of the hospital, such as stairs in the water that lead up to the beach. Also part of the hospital foundation is left. One part of it is about 15 ft high, and another part of it is a few feet shorter. It makes a good place to jump off of into the ocean. If you jump in the right place, it is an especially deep pool of water. There is always a group of kids and teenagers jumping off the tower-like things....it’s really scary, but also lots of fun!

There are a couple of very small sandy beaches on the island that give easy access to the water for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking.
