Hilo Hawaii Beaches - Richardson Beach
Richardson’s Beach Park, is one of several Hilo Hawaii beaches. It’s another one of the beautiful black sand beaches that are typical of the Big Island.
When you first get there, you walk along a short path through fish ponds built by the native Hawaiians hundreds of years ago. There are palm trees, mangroves, and other tropical greenery. Once you get to the water, you have a great view in front of you.
Across the blue green water, you can see north Hilo and the side of Mauna Kea Mountain over it. It's especially neat in the winter time, when you are warm and having fun at the beach... and you look across the bay, and see a snowy mountain.

This small beach is half black sand, and half lava. Because it is protected by the Hilo Bay, the water is calm, making this a good place to swim. There are also lots of fish to see and a pretty reef of multi-colored coral, which offers good snorkeling.

Richardson Beach is also a good place for the novice surfer and boogie boarder, because the waves are not too big.
