Hilo Hawaii Beaches Richardson BeachThe other day, I went to Richardson’s beach park, one of several Hilo Hawaii beaches. It’s another one of the beautiful black sand beaches that are typical of the Big Island. It’s a small, protected beach on the Hilo bay front.
When I first got there, I walked along a path through fish ponds built by the native Hawaiians hundreds of years ago. There are palm trees, mangroves, and other tropical greenery.
The small beach is half black sand, and half lava. The waters are calm, because it’s protected by the bay. The swimming is good, and the snorkeling is excellent. There's a lot of fish to see, and a pretty reef of multi-colored coral. The water isn't very deep.
Richardson Beach is a great place for the novice surfer because the waves are not too big. It’s a good place to go boogie boarding too.
It is a dramatic looking black sand beach.......across the blue green water, one can see north Hilo and the side of Mauna Kea Mountain. This side of the mountain always seems to look misty and magical.
Other Hilo beaches you may be interested in, are: Liliokalani Park, Honoli’i, and Coconut Island.
