Hapuna Beach...Hawaii Island Beach State Park

Island Beach State Park - Hapuna Beach - Christopher Seufert Photography

Hapuna Beach is a gorgeous Hawaii Island Beach State Park. When people think of a beach in Hawaii, they picture a beach like Hapuna... with fine white sand, warm turquoise water, and perfect swimming conditions when the ocean is calm.

Located on the Kona-Kohala coast, this State Park is a half mile long crescent, and is one of the few tropical beaches that is completely white and sandy, on the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s a real treat.

If you get there early in the morning, the water can be as calm as glass, but as it gets later in the day the waves get bigger and stronger. Luckily, there are lifeguards on duty.

In the afternoon, the waves are huge! My mom likes to float, so we try to get there before 10:00AM, but boogie boarders should go a little later in the day so they can catch the big waves.

If you like to snorkel, and are experienced, head for the south end of the beach. There are rocks, and pools which is home to many beautiful fish and coral. But the rest of the beach has a sandy bottom and not much to look at.

Hapuna beach has bathrooms, and showers. You can camp there, and also rent A-frames. Hapuna Beach Hotel is located at the north end of the beach.

Maui is so close, you can see the tip of it from this beach!
