King Kamehameha the Great Part ll
This is a continuation of
King Kamehameha Part l.
Kamehameha formed a huge army, and a great fleet of war canoes. In 1810 he had established the Hawaiian Kingdom, and unified the Hawaiian islands, just like the prophecy foretold told. It had taken him 28 years to accomplish this.
Six years later, he introduced the Hawaiian flag with its Union Jack in the upper corner and 8 stripes representing the main eight Hawaiian Islands. The King was proud of his relationship with Great Britian, and the flag shows the alliance between the two nations.
King Kamehameha was a fierce warrior, but he was also known as a just ruler. He introduced the Law of the Splintered Paddle, a severe punishment for those who hurt others. This insured that every man, woman and child could "lie down to sleep by the roadside without fear of harm." He also enforced laws against murder and theft.
Eventually, the great warrior fell ill. None of his Kahunas prayers, and no one with medical education could save him. His Kahunas said they should have a human sacrifice to save him, but the King would not allow it.
On may 8, 1819 Hawaii's most powerful King died, and his son Liholiho took the throne. His bones were hidden by his Kahuna, and today it is still a mystery where they rest. He was the only Kamehameha to live past the age of 42.
