Hawaiian Destinations Kona Hawaii One of our favorite hawaiian destinations is Kona Hawaii on the Big Island.
Kona Village is a small town, but it is full of things to do. Everywhere you turn there are shops, restaurants, and hotels. It is situated along the shore of Kailua Bay, on the west side of the Big Island. Scattered about, are small beaches where it’s fun to swim, surf, snorkel, parasail, and kayak.
There are many little museums and historical sites in Kona. Kids can enjoy a small arcade. One of the nice things about Kona is that everything is within walking distance. The shops are next to the hotels, and everything is right across from the beach. You will never be hungry, because the village is stuffed with restaurants.
I just got back from Kona today, after visiting my grandparents. We stayed at a condo that was just across from the beach and we had a beautiful ocean view. One thing that Kona has that the Hilo side of the Big Island doesn't have, are gorgeous sunsets. Every night we sat on our lanai with a camera and watched the sun go down.
While there, we went shopping and bought some shell jewelry and other Hawaiian knick-knacks. We ate lunch at a Greek restaurant that overlooked the ocean .... then went to the museum at the Royal Kona Hotel. At the museum we saw a beautiful feather cape that King Kamehameha wore.... made of yellow feathers from now extinct birds. We also saw a feather headdress, other ancient Hawaiian artifacts, and a huge stuffed marlin!
Another day, we went to the farmers market and afterwards, to the beach. Later, we dined at the Big Island Grill..... a very nice, clean restaurant. Delicious!
Unfortunately, today we had to come home. It was a long drive back to Hilo, but the trip was worth it.
