Surfing Hawaii
at Isaac Hale Beach

Surfing Hawaii at Isaac Hale Beach Park is a lot of fun. It is the perfect surfer beach with big waves, gentle breezes, and always blue sky. Located at Pohiki, on the east side of the Big Island, part of the beach is protected by a boat ramp, so it is a good place to swim as well.

The ride to this surfer beach is in itself a magical journey. To get there, we drive along a narrow twisty road through a jungle of wild guava, and avocado trees, while vines hang down from above. Huge mango trees that are hundreds of years old, line the road. There are turnoffs along the road where we like to stop and get fruit when it is in season. All the trees canopy over the road, as if we are driving through a tunnel. And when it’s sunny, the light comes through the trees, making everything glow.

Once we get there, we find a small rocky surfer beach... in the distance, there are palm trees blowing in the wind on another part of the coast. It’s beautiful. Near the shore, the water is turquoise, but very quickly becomes dark blue, due to the depth of the water. Sometimes if we’re lucky, we may see a turtle stick its head out of the water for a breath.

This small lava beach is ideal for the experienced surfer...the waves are big and the weather always seems to be good.

Tip- I’ve been told that if you are surfing Hawaii in a place where there are normally turtles, and you notice they disappear, there is a probably a shark nearby, and it would be smart to get out of the water.

On the other side of the boat ramp, the ocean is calm and protected, and perfect for swimming.

Not far from the beach, is a trail leading into the jungle, to a small tide pool. The pool is about 7ft wide, and 4 or 5 ft deep. This natural hot tub is very warm, because it is heated by a volcanic spring. It is set among lush jungle greenery, hanging vines, and twittering birdies.
