Weather Kona HawaiiGot Vog? A discussion of weather in Kona Hawaii must include an explanation of vog.
Vog is volcanic smog. It is a mixture of sulfur and gases emitted from the ever-erupting Kiluea Caldera on the Big Island of Hawaii. It loves to settle over Kona, and sometimes Hilo.
Todays Weather Kona Hawaii
Todays Vog level: 2 (scale 0-5)
Vog usually goes up high into the sky, and blows away, but sometimes weather inversions cause it to stay close to the land. It looks like fog....but you can tell its vog when you look out into the woods, or some kind of greenery that is close by, and it looks like it has a blue-ish tint.
Most people are not bothered by Vog, but others can be affected. For some, it increases respiratory problems. For others, it just stings their eyes. Whenever I go to Volcano National Park and its really voggy, my neck hurts. Some people get headaches or find it hard to breath.
On voggy days, we keep our doggie, Jet, inside the house. If he runs around too much, he has a hard time breathing.
One nice thing about Vog...it can make the Kona sunsets especially beautiful.
