Hawaii's White Rainbow

Have you ever seen a white rainbow at night?

A normal rainbow, seen in the daytime, is formed when sunlight streams through rain. You will only see it when the sun is shining behind you and it is raining in front of you. As the sun light shines through the raindrops, it is refracted, and splits into the familiar seven colors.

Hawaii White Rainbow The unusual night-time rainbow is white. It is seen when the moon is behind you and very bright. The light from it streams through rain or high humidity that is in front of you, and forms the white bow. This is not the commonly seen moonbow... which is just an aura of light around the moon.... but an actual arch in the sky, just like a regular rainbow except that it appears white since we are not able to see colors at night.

Even in Hawaii, these are an unusual sight. But if you are out and about at night, be sure to look for them. You might just be lucky enough to see one for yourself.
