Wreck Beach

Wreck Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach and Keoniloa Beach, got it’s name because of a shipwreck off shore, that is no longer there. Located on Kauai, this white sandy dream is ideal for surfers, boogie boarders, body surfers and windsurfers, who generally stay to the east side of the beach where the waves are better for these sports.

Some people swim here, but swimming can be difficult because of the surf and strong currents. If you see a green flag at the nearby Hyatt, it means that the ocean conditions are safe. (However, you most likely will not. The green flag has never been raised, even though safe conditions do occur on occasion.)

On the left side of the beach is a cliff called Makawehi Point. Here you will often see pole fishermen and people diving into the ocean, and there is said to be good hiking above the cliff. Anne Heche and Harrison Ford’s stunt doubles jumped off this cliff in the movie 6 Days/7 Nights.
